The image on the jacket is the book in one frame — the crack of magma down the middle, the canopy coming up out of the wreck. The figment holds creation in one hand and the lust to destroy in the other. Not two moods to be balanced. One grip.

There is a flower called Baker’s Globe Mallow whose seeds lie dormant in the soil for a hundred years — and will not sprout until a fire crosses their ground. The heat cracks the coat. The smoke itself carries the signal that wakes the seed. And the seedling rises into ground the fire cleared and fed. The book ends where the cover begins: you are the seed.
